Chapter 1 Terry’s Mistake

Terry forester was on his way to the second job interview he had scheduled for the day. The first interview had been at a publishing company and it hadn’t gone well. The interviewer seemed annoyed by something before the interview had even started and was unimpressed by Terry’s English degree or his experience as a tutor in college. Terry didn’t have high hopes for his second interview as he was probably going to be late for it due to having missed the bus and had to wait for the next one to show up. He was now on the bus heading for the law firm that he was interviewing for a secretary position at when he noticed something outside of the bus.

On the sidewalk shuffling towards the bus’ next stop was an older woman. She was clearly trying to make it to the stop before the bus arrived as she tried to pick up her pace when she noticed the bus coming her way, but she was still too slow. Terry wanted to help the older woman but if he got off to help her he would be late for certain and not just by a few minutes. The bus made its stop and began driving again and woman waved for the bus to wait but overbalanced herself sending her falling to the ground. Terry saw the fall and pulled the emergency break. He was off the bus as soon as it stopped and running to her aid. The bus drove off as Terry reached her offering her a hand to get her to her feet. Grateful for the assistance the woman stood up but faltered a little needing Terry’s help to stay up. She looked old enough to be Terry’s grandmother and he feared she had broken something. Luckily she had only bruised one leg and scraped her hands from the fall and was able to get to the bus stop with Terry’s help.

Grace introduced herself to Terry once they were both sitting at the bus stop and she thanked him for his help. Terry accepted the thanks and gave her his name but there was a sadness in his voice that he tried to hold back. Grace heard it immediately and gently questioned him about it. Terry explained about his interviews and how he was going to be really late for the second. By the time he finished his story the next bus had arrived and the two got on.

On the bus Grace tried to cheer Terry up and succeed somewhat as he started to feel less worried for what was ahead. When Terry’s stop came up Grace promised him she could get help getting off at her stop and that he shouldn’t worry about her. He was about to leave when she proffered a phone to him asking if it was his. It couldn’t have been because his phone had been secured in his bag but when he checked it wasn’t their and the phone she had was indeed his. Terry left the bus with his phone in a rush as it was about to leave and wasn’t able to ask Grace how she got his phone.

Now outside the law firm Terry checked his phone for the time to see just how late he was and was shocked to see he was somehow 5 minutes early. That shouldn’t have been possible but Terry didn’t have the time to think about it as he was running to the interview he was miraculously on time for.

“I’m sorry but I just don’t think your the right fit for us right now” said James Gibson the law firm’s interviewer and Terry’s heart sank again. The good fortune of somehow making it to the interview on time hadn’t helped and Terry had failed another interview. It would have been better if he had been late and not gotten his hopes up because it made the failure hurt even more. On top of that James had seemed bored with Terry throughout the meeting and looked almost glad to seem him leave.

Terry wanted to leave as fast as he could but was startled by a ring from his phone. Opening it up he found the ring had come from a notification from an unknown app on his phone. Terry didn’t remember downloading the app and opened it out of curiosity. The app called itself the One Word Changer and immediately prompted him to choose a target. The app showed a map of the area around him with names floating over it. Terry saw his in the middle and James in the room he had just left but he saw others that he didn’t recognize that must be other people in the office. Following the app’s direction he selected James as a target as he didn’t know anybody else but himself on the map. The app then dropped the map and one sentence replaced it.

“James Gibson thinks about how his last interviewee was a bad candidate for his secretary.”

Terry read it and was m
