Frigid

Samitia huddled near the woodstove, her hands clutching a mug of hot coffee. Outside the tiny mountain cabin a winter storm raged, depositing great drifting piles of snow against the cabin as well as the maples and pines fronting the cabin's small clearing.

She wrapped her blanket around her shoulders and moved to the cabin's tiny window. The view outside was almost homey; wind driven snow fluttering by the window to collect in massive drifts.

Unfortunately, the homey scene was slowing freezing her to death. The winter wind that blew the snow in pretty swirls was also blowing the same snow through every leak and crevice. The snow didn't last very long but the cold air from outside was more than enough to keep the the inside of the cabin frigid, despite the woodstove.

Samitia went back to huddling by the woodstove. She grimaced when she took a sip of her coffee, it had grown luke-warm. Luckily, the solution was easy; she merely placed the mug directly on top of the stove.

Waiting for her mug of coffee to heat back up she closed her eyes and tried to think warm thoughts. Samitia pictured herself in Hawaii, perhaps Waikiki...no. Even better, somewhere in the Caribbean. Jamaica sounded good.

After all, who in their right mind would agree to vacation in the mountains during winter?

An idiot, that's who.

Samitia woke with a start. Something was off. Different. It took several long moments while her brain raced, trying to figure out what was bothering her before she realized the wind outside had died.

Without the wind the cabin had heated up to the point of almost being comfortable. Sitting close to the woodstove and wrapped up in heavy blankets she was actually sweating. She shrugged them off and hung them over the back of her chair.

Free of the blankets, she spotted her mug on the stove. The coffee had boiled away, leaving brown sludge at the bottom of the cup. Sighing at the waste of a cup of precious coffee she dumped the mug in the metal pail that served as the cabin's sink. Despite the cabin having warmed up the water in the pail was still frigid. When she was ready to wash the dirty dishes she would simply heat the bucket by placing it on the wood stove.

Taking another look out of the cabin's tiny window she saw the snow was still falling in big puffy flakes. However, without the constant wind they fell straight down, turning everything into a soft, silent, wintery wonderland. Better yet, it acted like an insulator, blocking out both the noise and the cold. It was the first time in days Samitia didn't feel like she was on verge of freezing to death.

Her relief was short-lived however. As she watched the snow fall through the window there came a rapping at the cabin door. Startled, she spun away from the window. "Do I hear someone rapping on the cabin door? A gentle tapping while I was napping hard enough to snore?"

"Yes!" came the emphatic reply.

"Well then, who's that that knocking at my door?" said Samitia, who, while young and fair, did not qualify as a maiden in the classical sense.

"It's me, your friend! Must I say it again?"

"Which friend is that?"

"The one that got lost on the mountain and is chest deep in snow, that's which one! Now open the fucking door, you stupid whore!"

Steeling herself for the freezing air outside, Samitia threw open the cabin door. "Lynnette?"

"I'm not fucking Elsa!"

"Heh, if you were fucking Elsa that'd make you a frigid lesbian," Samitia said as she started shivering from the exposure to the cold air.

"Shut up and let me in already!"

Samitia moved back from the doorway and Lynnette stepped inside, quickly slamming the door shut behind her. A flurry of snow swirled through the cabin before turning into a brief shower of droplets; leaving Lynnette standing naked in front of the short blonde. The former brunette looked like a living statue of ice. Brown hair had turned as white as snow and the girl's normally ruddy complexion had become so pale it was nearly blue.

Samitia goggled at her friend before blurting, "What the fuck happened to you?"

Lynnette gave her friend an incomprehensible look. "Yes, something happened to me on the mountain. Something terrible."

The small blonde shook her head. "What the fuck is wrong with me," she said as she picked up the blankets from the chair she had deposited them on. "Let's get you warmed up before you die of hypothermia."

Lynnette gave her friend what looked like a failed attempt at a smile. "I'm sorry but blankets won't help. Not after what happened."

"What the fuck are you on about?"

Lynnette took a step closer to her. "I met someone on the mountain. Or perhaps I should say I met something on the mountain."

Samitia fell back a step. "
