The Shining Path
The End of The Long Night
Against the blackness of space, a solitary ship glided in the night.
‘Battle Stations!’ The ships AI’s voice rang out through the corridors.
‘All crew... Man your battle stations.’ The crew was scrambling to their stations.
‘3 minutes 8... 3 minutes 9... 3 minutes 10...’ The first office Bruce Sheppard counted as a crewman ran passed.
‘MOVE IT!’ he shouted as the crewman ran into the near by point defence station. At the same time Captain Hotaru Isuna walked out of her quarters and up to a ladder. Activating her anti gravity harness, she started to descend, at first holding onto the sides of the ladder. Several decks down, she let go of the ladder, smiling as her descent slowed to a stop on the same deck as her first officer.
‘I wish you wouldn’t.’ The ships AI said, ‘Your anti grav harness might fail... and I mightn’t be able to catch you.’
‘You wouldn’t let that happen Henri.’ Hotaru said, ‘If it did, you’d have to break in a new captain.’ She smiled as she turned a corner.
‘Port point defence station 7 manned and ready.’ Someone called out.
‘Point defence station 8 manned and ready.’
‘Point defence station 9 manned and ready.’
‘Report.’ Hotaru said, approaching Sheppard. ‘All stations manned and ready.’ He said with a salute
‘Elapsed time 3 minutes 45 seconds.’ Henri said.
‘Too Slow!’ Sheppard yelled for everyone to hear. Hotaru’s eyes went wide for a moment as she started to rub her right ear.
‘Too loud.’ She muttered, making her way to the command deck.
‘3 minutes 45 seconds.’ Sheppard said, ‘If it were a real battle... this entire section would be vented.’
‘Perhaps.’ Hotaru said, ‘Ship wide please.’ A tone went off; signalling the ship wide comm. System was active.
‘Not bad people... but I know we can do better.’ She said, ‘Let’s try and get it to 3 minutes or less… Isuna out.’ When she stopped the comm. System deactivated. Sheppard smiled softly as the crew started going about their normal duties. Some were once again going back to their quarters for some rack time. Others were heading to the mess hall their evening or morning meal. Smiling herself, they started walking again.
‘How is young Peri?’ he asked. He’d known Hotaru’s daughter since she was a baby and despite being from a genetic offshoot of humanity, Hotaru considered him to be an uncle to her.
‘Feeling much better.’ Hotaru replied, ‘I’m just glad the doctors caught the Triangulm measles early.’ They both that the disease was almost extinct only being caught by less the 1% of the trillions of Commonwealth citizens. Before they could say anymore, Henri interrupted.
‘Captain... a courier has just come out of Slipstream... It’s signalling a Galactic emergency.’ Hotaru and Sheppard looked at each other in surprise. A galactic emergency signal hadn’t been used in almost 100 years.
‘On our way.’ Hotaru said before they broke into a sprint.
The doors quickly opened as Hotaru and Sheppard approached Command.
‘Captain on deck!’ The lancer at the door said, making everyone stand to attention.
‘Report.’ Hotaru said, walking up to her station near the pilot’s chair.
'A courier just transited to normal space.’ Logan replied.
‘They’re hailing us.’ Henri’s android avatar said.
‘On screen.’ Sheppard said, before one of the 3 main screens changed to an image of the courier pilot.
‘This is the Systems courier ship Destiny.’ He said.
‘Go ahead Destiny.’
‘There’s a rogue black hole... Hepaistos system.’ The pilot said, ‘They’re evacing now but there isn’t enough ships for everyone.’
‘Logan... set course for Hepaistos.’
‘Setting course.’
‘Destiny... keep spreading the word.’ Sheppard said before the screen changed back to its normal status display.
‘Course set.’
‘Transit to slipstream.’ Hotaru said. Seconds later the ship opened a slip portal and shuddering as it entered it.
‘Ready the ship for refugees.’ Sheppard said. ‘Emptying cargo bays 1 through 6.’ Chie
