INGO WOMEN 3

So the brood of seventeen began their move out of the compound and into the interior. Tara and Yurwa took turns carrying little Ulirh.

Fara led the band with Brooke a close second, carrying the younger children when needed. It wasn’t long before they hit a village. Fara, in robes garnered respect. Asking for the local counselor, she was led to see Cesna.

“We are on a legal mission from Borid, my village. I need to know the direction to the Queen.”

“The QUEEN?”

“It is a legal matter. Can you help us?”

“Y-yes. Follow this trail. It is the easiest. You might encounter other tribes, but they should not give you any trouble, seeing your Elite robes and all. It is seven sols from here.”

“I am indebted to you.” Fara left and joined her group. “Fill your bladders with water. We have long to go.” Brooke was first to help the children carrying their skins toward the flowing stream.

Fara was concerned for their journey but felt a relief that Brooke was going along. She was young yet experienced. It was comforting.

So they trudged on. The forest got thicker, yet the trail was clear for them. Soon the children complained. Their feet hurt or they were tired.

“You think the Queen is tired?” Fara shot back at her brood. She didn’t care who said it.

Brooke took another tack. “The Queen is very beautiful and would love to meet you. Don’t you love the Queen?”

Of course they all professed love for the ruler. “Then we must continue so that you may meet her and show your love,” Brooke acknowledged.

The sun began to set. Fara looked for and soon found a clearing near the trail. “We should encamp for the evening.” She dropped her large pack and began to unpack the large folded oil cloth that would be their covering.

Brooke looked after the children, getting them to gather sticks for a fire. Fara then used her sharp machete to hack down saplings for their tent. Brooke watched Fara work, noting her strong arms and shoulders bulging with effort, thick sinews of brute strength straining to work the green wood. A slight smile crossed her lips thinking about their time together so far. Just then the kids were back with armloads of dry sticks.

As Fara erected the oil cloth tent, Brooke started the fire, asking the girls to unload some of the food they hurriedly grabbed for the trip. Without being noticed, she snuck away into the woods. She knew what she needed to do.

“Where’s Brooke?” little Haidra asked loudly. Fara turned as she finished using a vine and wooden stake to anchor one corner of the tent. She looked about. A sudden shiver went up her spine. Her senses became acute as she felt danger in the area.

“Sit by the fire, all of you,” she ordered as she unsheathed her machete.

There was some noise coming from behind Fara. She turned and held the sharp blade ready. Out of the thick forest came Brooke, holding three fat rabbits.

“Where were you?” Fara asked with relief.

“Getting us some dinner.” She smiled as she walked past Fara and set them near the fire.

“Are we going to eat THOSE?” asked Etna with disdain. “Ewwww.”

Brooke produced a sharp knife and began to skin the rabbits. More “Ewww’s” were cried out from the younger children. Tara snapped at them to be quiet. She watched raptly as Brooke worked the small beasts easily.

Brooke noticed the older girl watching. “Now comes the icky part.” With that she began to gut the animals. “You need to know this to survive Tara and take care of your family.”

Tara, grossed out yet fascinated by Brooke’s expert butchering, only nodded. Soon all three rabbits were ready. Brooke began to call out but stopped herself. She wanted to call Fara by her name but knew it would be inappropriate in front of the children. “Counselor, I think we need a spit to roast these meaty rabbits on.”

Fara nodded and began to hack at some branches, finding two “y” shaped and one long yet strong stick to secure the dinner on.

With her massive strength, Fara sank the “y” shaped sticks deep into the hard ground. “Wonderful, thank you,” Brooke said as she speared the rabbits onto the long stick.

With more kindling, a good fire was brought to life, slowly yet assuredly cooking their meat. With a small iron pot heating water, Brooke cut up some vegetables they had brought. Soon enough, all were eating.

Darkness came faster than Fara thought and hurried the children under the oil cloth. After eating, she and Brooke went out for soft grasses which they used to cover the ground under the cloth. Soon the children were asleep. Brooke sat by the fire, watching the red embers slowly dying. Fara came over, draping a woolen shawl over her petite shoulders.

“Thank you.” Fara sat next to her, using a small stick
